Principal Income Protector Disability Insurance for Physicians

Principal Income Protector can be built with different disability definitions, residual benefits, future-increase features, riders, limitations, and underwriting assumptions. Insuring Income helps physicians understand the actual proposal before comparing it against the market.

Availability, rider language, discounts, pricing, and underwriting outcomes depend on state, occupation, health, income, and carrier rules.

Program distinction

Fully underwritten Income Protector, GSI Income Protector, and HH750 state/GSI context should be reviewed separately.

Typical physician use case

Own occupation, specialty language, residual/recovery, future increase planning, occupation class, and underwriting review.

Contract doctrine caution

The specimen policy and rider forms govern the actual contract. Carrier marketing pages, brochures, proposal PDFs, and advisor summaries are useful explanation layers, but they should be checked against current policy forms before applying.

Product Doctrine

What the policy, rider forms, specimen contracts, and official product materials can support when the applicant, state, and rider selections line up.

proposal_reality

Proposal Reality

What a specific proposal PDF actually illustrates for one applicant: benefit amount, premium, riders shown, riders absent, limitations, and assumptions.

underwriting_reality

Underwriting Reality

What the carrier ultimately approves, modifies, excludes, postpones, declines, issues, or leaves untaken after underwriting review.

Plain-English overview

Carrier pages should clarify the review, not crown a winner.

Principal Income Protector is Principal’s current individual disability income product for most states in Principal’s public financial-professional materials. It is used to protect personal income and may also appear in employer-sponsored Guaranteed Standard Issue contexts.

For physicians, the important review is not simply whether the carrier is Principal. The important review is whether the proposal includes the right disability definition, residual/recovery structure, future-increase features, benefit period, elimination period, mental/nervous/substance limitation treatment, discounts, and underwriting assumptions.

Principal HH750 is a prior/legacy policy series that may still appear in California, New York, older documents, and some GSI/state references. It should be clearly separated from current Principal Income Protector education unless a reviewed source ties it to a specific state, historical policy, or GSI context.

The Specimen Policy Controls

Marketing language is not the contract.

The specimen policy is the governor. The proposal shows the quoted design. The issued policy controls benefits.

Carrier/product page

Product overview

Principal public pages explain product positioning, feature menus, and availability caveats. They are useful, but they do not replace the policy or rider forms.

Producer guides

Underwriting and feature context

Producer guides can explain issue limits, occupation classes, riders, discounts, and underwriting requirements. They should be treated as planning context, not consumer contract doctrine.

Proposal PDF

Quoted design

The proposal shows the actual benefit amount, premium, riders, discounts, limitations, and assumptions illustrated for the applicant. It may differ from a generic product menu.

Issued policy

Actual contract

After underwriting, the issued policy and attached riders control what was approved, modified, excluded, limited, and payable under claim facts.

Policy Series / Source Context

Source confidence is part of the education.

If a page cannot identify the governing policy series, form numbers, and state scope, it should say so. That keeps historical documents from turning into timeless advice.

Configuration matters

Same carrier, different policy design.

Principal Income Protector should be reviewed as the current product framework. HH750 should be labeled historical, state-specific, or GSI-contextual unless a reviewed current source says otherwise.

Principal’s public materials describe two disability-definition options: own occupation and true own occupation. A proposal should be checked to see which definition, rider, or enhancement is actually included.

Principal’s current product profile describes specialty own occupation as included for specialists in legal, medical, and dental occupations, but state, form, occupation class, and underwriting details still need proposal and policy review.

Future increase language should be translated carefully. Principal materials identify annual and event-driven increase concepts, including Annual Increase and Maximize Your Benefit, and the exact version should be matched to the proposal.

Pricing depends on age, gender, occupation, tobacco status, state, policy structure, selected riders, and discounts. A lower premium can reflect a different design, not simply a better deal.

Definitions of Total Disability

Total disability definition

Own occupation

Principal’s public Income Protector page identifies own occupation as one disability-definition option. Confirm the exact policy wording and whether the proposal includes any rider or definition enhancement.

Total disability definition

True own occupation / Total Disability While Working

Principal’s product profile says the definition can be enhanced to include Total Disability While Working, described in industry language as true own occupation. This should be confirmed in the actual proposal and policy forms.

Total disability definition

Specialty own occupation context

Principal’s product profile states that specialty own occupation is included for specialists in legal, medical, and dental occupations. Physicians should still confirm specialty, state, occupation class, and issued-policy wording.

Total disability definition

GSI or state-specific design

Principal GSI may use Income Protector, while HH750 appears in Principal’s GSI materials for CA and NY. This is a program/state distinction, not a reason to call HH750 the current flagship Income Protector product.

What physicians should understand

The details matter more than the logo.

Occupation class is a carrier grouping input, not a personal merit score. It can affect issue limits, premium, rider availability, underwriting requirements, and how Principal compares with other carriers.

Physicians should confirm whether the proposal includes own occupation, true own occupation, and specialty own occupation language that fits their actual clinical work.

Residual Disability and Recovery Benefit language deserves careful review because many physician claims involve reduced duties, reduced procedures, reduced patient volume, or recovery after returning to work.

Principal future increase features should be mapped to Principal-specific terminology. Do not flatten Annual Increase, Maximize Your Benefit, Benefit Update concepts, or event-driven increase rights into a simple yes/no.

Mental/nervous/substance limitation treatment, state approval, and underwriting modifications can materially change the value of an otherwise attractive premium.

Strengths To Review

Why this may be worth reviewing.

  • May be worth reviewing when a physician wants premium efficiency without losing sight of contract definition, residual/recovery, and future increase structure.
  • Can be useful when specialty own occupation, true own occupation, enhanced residual, or event-driven future increase features are illustrated and available.
  • May fit employer or multi-life contexts when Principal GSI or discount assumptions are confirmed and separated from a normal fully underwritten comparison.
  • Often belongs in a side-by-side review when affordability and rider breadth need to be balanced against Guardian, Ameritas, MassMutual, and The Standard.

Tradeoffs / Questions

What should be reviewed before applying.

  • Principal’s current public page says Income Protector is approved for all states except CA and NY, while Principal’s GSI page identifies HH750 for CA and NY. That state/product distinction should be visible before applying.
  • Producer-facing materials are not consumer contracts. Feature menus, rider lists, issue limits, and discounts must be checked against the actual proposal and state-approved forms.
  • Some features, provisions, and riders may not be available in all states or with all occupation classes, and some riders may require additional premium.
  • Underwriting can request additional information, modify an offer, limit a rider, reduce a benefit, add exclusions, or decline coverage. A proposal is not the same thing as an issued policy.
  • The lowest premium structure may not include the disability definition, residual/recovery design, COLA, future increase feature, or mental/nervous/substance treatment the physician expects.

Rider and feature glossary

Translate the proposal before comparing price.

own_occupation

Own occupation definition

Principal identifies own occupation as a disability-definition option. The proposal should show which definition is illustrated and whether any rider changes the base definition.
Base or optional configuration State dependent Proposal reality must confirm

own_occupation

True own occupation / Total Disability While Working

Principal’s product profile describes an enhancement to include Total Disability While Working. Physicians should confirm whether that enhancement appears in the quote and issued forms.
Optional rider or enhancement Underwriting dependent Specimen confirmation pending

own_occupation

Specialty own occupation

Principal’s product profile states specialty own occupation is included on policies for specialists in legal, medical, and dental occupations. The exact occupation, specialty, and state language should still be reviewed.
Occupation dependent State dependent Proposal reality must confirm

residual_partial_disability

Residual Disability and Recovery Benefit

This can materially affect partial-disability and return-to-work scenarios. Compare the income-loss formula, recovery language, and duration against other proposals.
Optional rider Variant matters Proposal reality must confirm

residual_partial_disability

Short-Term Residual Disability Benefit

Principal’s product profile lists this as a rider. It should be distinguished from broader residual/recovery structures and reviewed for duration and trigger differences.
Optional rider Lower-cost structure possible Proposal reality must confirm

future_increase_option

Maximize Your Benefit

MYB is Principal-specific future-increase language. Treat it as a carrier implementation, not a generic future insurability checkbox.
No-cost rider in reviewed product profile Carrier-specific FI variant Financial underwriting still applies

automatic_increase_benefit

Annual Increase rider

Principal’s product profile lists Annual Increase as a no-cost rider. It should be separated from event-driven increase rights and checked against the policy and proposal.
No-cost rider in reviewed product profile Carrier-specific FI variant Proposal reality must confirm

cola

Cost of Living Adjustment

Review whether COLA is included, the percentage, when increases begin, the cap, and whether the increase method fits a long claim scenario.
Optional rider Additional premium possible Claim-triggered increase

catastrophic_disability

Catastrophic Disability Benefit

CAT can add benefits for severe disability scenarios and should be reviewed separately from base monthly benefit and COLA.
Optional rider Additional premium possible Underwriting dependent

mental_nervous_substance_limitation

Mental/Nervous and Substance Abuse Disorders limitation

Principal’s product profile identifies an MNSA rider/discount and notes required use for several occupations and CA/NY cases. This must be checked before assuming unlimited or limited treatment.

student_loan

Student loan / debt-related planning

Do not assume a student loan rider is present from the carrier name. If debt protection is part of the planning goal, confirm whether the proposal includes a specific rider or whether another carrier structure is being used.
Proposal reality must confirm Specimen confirmation pending Advisor review

issue_participation_limits

Issue and participation limits

Principal underwriting materials tie benefit amounts to income, occupation class, age, individual versus employer pay, and existing coverage. The proposal should be normalized against those limits.
Occupation-class dependent Financial underwriting applies Underwriting dependent

Other Built-In or Optional Features

Some features are included. Others must be chosen, priced, or approved.

Built-in / base-policy style features to confirm

Principal’s product profile lists several policy features, but the issued policy and state forms should still be reviewed before relying on them.

  • Non-cancelable structure with guaranteed premium rate to the selected policy termination age when premiums are paid
  • Conditionally renewable for life after the policy termination age, subject to policy terms
  • Portable coverage that can stay with the insured if they change jobs
  • Interrupted elimination period
  • Military suspension
  • Recurring disability
  • Rehabilitation benefit
  • Transplant surgery benefit
  • Waiver of premium benefit

Optional / rider / endorsement / underwriting-dependent features

These should be inspected in the proposal. Some may be no-cost riders in current Principal materials, some may require extra premium, and some may depend on state, occupation, or underwriting.

  • Total Disability While Working / true own occupation enhancement
  • Residual Disability and Recovery Benefit
  • Short-Term Residual Disability Benefit
  • Maximize Your Benefit rider
  • Annual Increase rider
  • Cost of Living Adjustment
  • Catastrophic Disability Benefit
  • Limitation of Benefits for Mental/Nervous and Substance Abuse Disorders
  • Death Benefit, Capital Sum Benefit, and Supplemental Health Benefit where available
  • DI Retirement Security as a separate product concept, not a generic Income Protector rider

How to Read a Principal Proposal

Check the illustrated offer before you compare price.

  • Monthly benefit, annual premium, monthly premium, and annual cost per $100 of monthly benefit
  • Elimination period and benefit period
  • Premium mode, level or graded premium assumptions, and discounts
  • Issue state, policy form number, occupation class, income assumptions, and existing disability coverage
  • Whether the design is fully underwritten, GSI, multi-life, resident/fellow, or another special program
  • Own occupation, true own occupation, Total Disability While Working, and specialty own occupation language
  • Residual Disability and Recovery Benefit versus Short-Term Residual or no residual coverage
  • Maximize Your Benefit, Annual Increase, Benefit Update, or other future-increase language
  • COLA percentage, timing, cap, and whether it applies only during a claim
  • Catastrophic Disability, DI Retirement Security, debt-related riders, or other optional benefits
  • Mental/nervous/substance limitation treatment and any required MNSA rider/discount assumptions
  • Exclusions, limitations, amendments, underwriting requirements, or modified approval language

Where consumers need to be careful

A quote can hide the real tradeoff.

  • Do not compare Principal against another carrier by premium alone. Compare the disability definition, residual/recovery structure, future increase language, COLA, limitations, discounts, and underwriting assumptions together.
  • Do not assume HH750 language applies to a current Principal Income Protector proposal unless the source is explicitly historical, state-specific, or GSI-related.
  • Do not assume every Principal proposal includes true own occupation, the strongest residual structure, COLA, CAT, or future-increase rights. The proposal and issued policy must show what is actually included.
  • A proposal may be revised by underwriting. The issued policy and attached riders are the documents that ultimately matter.

Common Physician Structures

Examples for comparison, not universal advice.

  • Attending physician structures where occupation class, income, existing coverage, and benefit limits shape the maximum monthly benefit.
  • Resident/fellow or younger attending structures where future increase language needs to be compared against income-growth expectations.
  • Balanced premium/rider comparisons against Guardian, Ameritas, MassMutual, and The Standard.
  • Principal GSI structures where Income Protector may fund employer-sponsored coverage and HH750 may appear in CA/NY context.

Historical / Market Context

Historical documents stay useful when they are labeled.

  • Principal HH750 is a legacy/prior policy series in the current doctrine model. It should not be presented as the current flagship product page for Principal Income Protector.
  • Principal’s public GSI page says the GSI plan is funded with Principal Income Protector and identifies HH750 for CA and NY. That makes HH750 a state/GSI-context reference here, not the main Income Protector product.
  • Older Principal Series 700 and HH750 documents remain useful historical doctrine when they are labeled by form, date, state, and currentness. They should not silently inform current Income Protector guidance.

When to review Principal

  • You want to compare Principal Income Protector premium efficiency against the actual rider design.
  • Future income growth, annual increase, and event-driven increase features need to be translated before applying.
  • You want to confirm whether the proposal includes own occupation, true own occupation, and physician specialty language.
  • You are reviewing a GSI, multi-life, resident/fellow, CA, or NY context where HH750 or state-specific language may appear.

Have us compare this against other physician-focused options.
